The Republic of China (ROC) occupies the Pacific island of Taiwan and a few
neighboring islands off the coast of mainland China (the People's Republic of
China, PRC). The ROC is a democracy, while the PRC is a Communist state.
The division between the ROC and the PRC is a result of the Chinese Civil War
(1927 to 1950), which was fought between the Chinese Nationalist Party and
the Communist Party of China. After the long civil war, the Communist Party
of China won control of the mainland, and the previously ruling Nationalist
Party leaders and followers fled to Taiwan, establishing a one-party state in
Taiwan.
Until the 1990s, both governments claimed to be the legitimate government
for China as a whole. The ROC eventually dropped the claim. How did this
change in ROC policy most likely change relations between the two
governments?
A. It weakened relationships because there was no longer a reason
for PRC and ROC to interact.
B. It improved relationships because one government no longer
insisted it should rule the other.
C. It strengthened relationships because both PRC and ROC now had
the same kind of economy.
D. It made relationships more distant because the cultures of the two
countries grew separate.
