The Westerly's are the name given to the prevailing winds which, in the open oceans, generally blow from west to east at latitudes from 30 to 60 degrees (both north and south of the equator). This includes parts of the US. Because of this winds, blowing from the Pacific across the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California creates which is at least partially responsible for the Great Basin Desert.
