Why is australia called the land down under?

Australia is the smallest continent on Earth and is slightly smaller than the United States of America. Australia is often called the "land down under." That's because the entire continent of Australia is south of the equator which is the imaginary line that separates the northern hemisphere from the southern hemisphere.
