Liu Bang was Emperor of China from 202 BC to 195 BC. He was the first emperor of the Han Dynasty. Together with Xiang Yu, they both overthrew the Qin dynasty in 207 BC. Under the rule of Liu Bang, Confucian thought gradually replaced the thought of legalism; Confucian scholars were welcome in his government, and the harsh laws of legalism were abated.

Liu Bang also annexed most kingdoms and established principalities, with their children and relatives as princes. Thus he consolidated his newborn empire.
