Joseph cambell's "hero with a thousand faces" is a great source for this. the hero's journey is a cycle. through each revolution, the hero becomes more mature. start: status quo. the leave their home, brave the dangers of the unknown, face death and possibly even die, only to be reborn. they claim what they seek, and return home. status quo again, but this time they are at a different part in the social hierarchy. they have matured, grown, become more than they were before.
