After much discussion and careful consideration, our school board has decided to consider volunteer service as a high school graduation requirement. the idea has numerous advocates in the district, including many students. the opportunities this type of program will create can benefit students and community alike, and high school students can look forward to it.
required community service not only sparks creativity, but it also can provide students with valuable new skills. jack bright, former class president, says that volunteer service gave him skills that have him excel in college engineering courses. a related benefit is the set of connections service creates with community leaders. these relationships can provide new avenues for friendship and future professional careers.
research has shown that thinking skills improve because students develop problem-solving methods while working on service projects. leadership skills, personal confidence, and increased responsibility are also desirable products of community service. studies show that self-esteem improves and that students often become more politically aware and active. as an example, mayor carrie acosta credits her high school community service with opening the doors for her career.
possible projects are unlimited. these are just a few of the proposed ideas:
• build a community garden.
• tutor younger students.
• clean up a park.
• plant trees in parks and at schools.
required community service will give us new skills and connections and will prepare us for college or life in the working world. it will provide an organized way to contribute and will offer opportunities we will value for the rest of our lives.
