When a student is studying the ways in which the English language has evolved, her or she is studying the development of the English language.  TO study the alliteration of the English language would be to study how the same letters or sounds are used in connecting words.  To study the origin of the language would be study where it came from.  To study the repetition of the language would be to study how various movements in the language have repeated themselves.
