The answer i would put is that it is important to know what happened when slavery was around and that what he wrote in his book convinced people it was wrong. Many people including myself were moved by his words. I was touched when i read about the inequality and all the hardships he had which was another big theme in his autobiography.

Fredrick Douglass's autobiography is written by him to talk about his life d JK;) 
It wanted to tell people about how hard his life was when he was a slave and he thought that if he gave it to the president maybe slavery will be abolished, and guess what? He got invited to the White House! His book tells 's people that escaping is not so hard.
