In the story "The First Seven Years," a few things begin to go wrong for Feld after Sobel quits. The worst of these problems is that Feld has a heart attack.   

Sobel quits when he hears Feld arranging for his daughter to go out with a young man named Max. Feld does not know that Sobel himself is in love with his daughter.

When Sobel hears Feld setting Max up with his daughter, he quits. As a result, Feld is forced to hire a new assistant. This assistant is not as good as Sobel, however. Even worse, Feld later learns that this new assistant is stealing from him. Hearing this news gives Feld a heart attack. (We are told earlier that he had had another heart attack years before.)

Not only does Sobel quit, but Max and Sobel's daughter never really hit it off. They go out twice but after that decide not to see one another again.

After his heart attack, Feld remains in bed for several weeks. After he recovers, he seeks out Sobel and makes amends. Finally, Sobel agrees to return to work in the hopes of one day marrying Feld's daughter.
