Pulling out a pistol only told the people she helped to stand up for what they believe. She only did that because she had to protect herself and the other people around her. 
other parts of the articles are times when she would come in secret and create a diversion so the white men would go another way then they would (which was very creative). but there are a lot of creative characteristics in the articles of her making and doing tough things.
