What is the significance of making a piligrimege

A pilgrimage can be different for everyone.  Thus, the importance (or significance) of making a pilgrimage will always vary.  The thing to keep in mind, however, is that a pilgrimage will almost always go beyond “face value.”  What does that mean?  Well, if one makes a pilgrimage to the Statue of Liberty, he or she will not just be going for the sake of going to see the statue.  A pilgrimage will always hold a deeper meaning because the location/destination will be important in some regard (spiritual, moral, sentimental, or even historical).  That said, if person has ancestors who arrived in the United States through Ellis Island, to see the location and same statue his or her ancestors saw could be so important to him or her that he or she made it point to visit the Statue of Liberty.  Thus, the visit to the Statue of Liberty wouldn’t just be a visit for visit’s sake, it would be a pilgrimage because of how the location is of particular importance to the person making the journey.
