For her art, the Lady of Shalott gives up all contact with the human world. She is not able to look out to see the people pass by her tower, or else she will fall victim to an unknown fate because of the curse put on her. This curse represents the artist's binding to their art, the struggle of not being able to let go. Finally the Lady breaks this bond with her project. When Lancelot "flash'd into the crystal mirror, " "She left the web, she left the loom She made three paces thro' the room ". Lancelot was worth leaving her art and dying for.
