To retell a story in a different form or genre is called 'adaptation.'

Often when movies or books become big hits, they will be turned into a different genre or medium, such as video game, stage play, etc. The reason this is done is because they can assume that anyone that enjoyed the book or movie might be interested in a stage play or even a video game.
