The name Dee represents the ancestral heritage to the narrator.

The narrator is the mother of the two daughters in the story "Everyday Use" written by Alice Walker. The two sisters Maggie and Dee are very distinct from each other. The younger one was Dee whose name was symbolic of the hardships and struggles which their ancestors had gone through. On the other hand, for Dee, her culture was a means to preserve it and keep it for reference in the future.
