Therefore, they proceed to his house. However, Sherburn greets them from the roof of his front porch, and delivers a speech in which he attacks the mob mentality that led people to go look for him. He claims that he does not believe the mob to be brave enough to lynch him. The speech resonates with the crowd, which eventually disperses.
