Gray light lingered above the trees, but the woods were full of night. Dasha felt solely responsible for the safety of her niece. When Ada stumbled, Dasha grabbed her tiny hand, then picked her up. "See? This is fun," she said to the child, forcing sunshine into her voice. Her thoughts were bleak: Why is she so heavy? We are good and truly lost. I don't want her to be scared... 1.
