The human mind only notices and sees what’s different. If you were standing in front of a classroom and all the students were wearing red shirts, except one who was wearing a white shirt, the only person you'd see is the person in the white shirt. Most of us try to be like everyone else because of a strong desire to be comfortable in life. What we should realize is that it takes a conscious effort to be unique and to embrace your differences so you can gain inner peace and be comfortable with yourself.

We must find our niche within our family, school, and social circles, but then differentiate ourselves in a positive way from everyone else. That might mean working harder and smarter, going above and beyond in our responsibilities, or treating others better than they treat us.

Let's focus on each of the three areas where we'd like to differentiate ourselves: within our family, at school, and with our friends. Research and identify 2 things you can do differently that will bring a positive influence into EACH of these groups. You should be identifying 6 things total.

1. List the groups and the 2 new behaviors

2. What do you think will be the reaction of the group? Will the reaction be positive or negative?

3. If positive, do you think others will begin to adopt the new behavior? If negative, how can you fight through the negativity and still be able to follow through with your goal?

Set a personal goal that you're going to be thoughtful and consistent about these new behaviors for 1 full month. Hopefully, at the end of the month you'll be so used to your new behavior that it'll be like second nature to you.

The harlem renaissance dawned in an era of pervasive racism and segregation. although legally "free," many african americans were still bound by ideas that had their roots in the slavery of earlier centuries. identity and freedom are important ideas presented in many of the poems from the harlem renaissance. furthermore, the values of identity and freedom are not unique to particular times and places. as hughes expresses in "dream variations," all humans want to be able to develop their identities in freedom. what role does freedom play in the poems you read in this unit? what is required of a society to enable each individual to be true to his or her identity and be free to live by that identity? write about at least three of the poems, describing how the poet uses imagery to depict freedom and identity, the lack of it, or the desire for it.

“heartwork each day is born with a sunrise and ends in a sunset, the same way we open our eyes to see the light, and close them to hear the dark. you have no control over how your story begins or ends. but by now, you should know that all things have an ending. every spark returns to darkness. every sound returns to silence. and every flower returns to sleep with the earth. the journey of the sun and moon is predictable. but yours, is your ultimate art.” ― suzy kassem what does this quote mean to you? and why? i'm not looking for anything in particular, i just wanted to know. : )
