In this activity, you will write a short story using what you’ve learned from reading Jack London’s "How to Build a Fire" about wilderness survival.

Part A

Begin your story with an interesting introduction. The introduction contains your story’s exposition. It should describe where you were, what conditions you were in, and what your initial concerns were.

Part B

Next, focus on your story’s rising action. Write about a few events that continue your story and move the plot forward. What troubles did you encounter in the wild?

Write your story’s climax, the point of greatest tension. Describe what happened and how you resolved the problem.

Part D

Focus on the falling action of your story. Now is the time to wind down your story and describe how you headed back to safety.

Tip! Begin to end your story. Stay consistent with your verb tense. If the story is written in the past tense, keep using that same verb tense.

Part E

Finally, write your conclusion, which contains your story’s resolution. What did you learn from this experience? If there’s one piece of advice you could give before your friend goes camping, what is it?
