Mistakes will happen, and stakeholders will need to be informed. For this assignment, you will compose three short emails, each to a different archetype of boss. In each case, you will relay the details of a fictional situation, filled in by your own technical knowledge and experience; however, the details you relay and the rhetorical strategies you employ will need to be tailored to each of the different audiences. Scenario You are the project leader. You have discovered that your coworker, Chris, has made a serious error that will significantly delay the project’s completion. This shouldn’t derail the project, but it will probably lead to additional time and expense on the part of your employer (possibly the customer). As project leader, you will need to report to your supervisor, but for the purpose of this assignment we’re going to hypothesize three different types of manager, each of whom you need to tailor a specific letter for: Mr. Concise supervises many projects and doesn’t have time to listen to long stories. He wants to know about where we are, what we’re doing, and what he has to do as a consequence. Mr. Verbose has a mind for details: he’s the sort that wants to understand what happened, what our plan is, and how we know that it will be the right plan moving forward? Mr. Anxious is new to his position and not yet comfortable with everything that entails. He has trouble understanding technical implications, and in this respect needs more guidance, support, and reassurance. Details Chris is a hard worker, but may not have the experience/expertise required for the job. He has made numerous errors in the past, but none this serious before. He is well liked by the team members; he is picking up new skills; however, he is (probably) the least qualified member of the team. When you pointed out the error to him, he immediately took responsibility for it and was very apologetic; currently, he is angry with himself and nervous about the situation. Your boss (each archetype) likes you, and has let on that there will be opportunities for you to advance in the organization. You have had limited experience as project leader. Up until recently, you have been handling more minor projects; this is one of the more important projects you have been given. For this project, your boss has requested frequent updates and progress reports. You know that Mr. Client is important to your organization and that he can be demanding. Fill in any details about the problem/solution(s) that are relevant to your field of study.
