Scout describes the opening of Tom Robinson’s trial as "a gala occasion." Certainly, a trial that may result in a man losing his life is anything but a "gala." What does Scout mean? What is she implying? (Recall Miss Maudie’s comment that to watch a man on trial for his life is "morbid" and that the townspeople are behaving as if it were "a Roman carnival.")
