1. State the line of To Kill A Mockingbird that you wish to explain and defend in an essay. Each line represents a theme. You should choose a theme and have at least one quote that supports that theme. You may choose one of the four quotes given below or one of your own from this book: "I thought Jem and I would get grown, but there wasn't much else for us to learn. . ." (Scout, Chapter 31)
"It's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Atticus, Chapter 10)
Trash and fine folks . . . (multiple quotations)
"You never really understand a person . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." (Atticus, Chapter 3)
Please remember that the parenthetical citations being used for these quotes in this lesson are not in MLA - you will have to find the quote in your edition of the book and cite it appropriately. Please also keep in mind that your interpretation will be based on Harper Lee’s book, but you may use Bible verses to support your argument and interpretation if appropriate.

Using this line as a foundation, develop a thesis statement for your essay that reveals the theme you intend to interpret. You do not need to use the exact quote, but your thesis should communicate the main idea of the quote (the theme). Remember that you will need to state your stance on and interpretation of the topic you chose clearly.
Compose an outline for “Essay: Interpretive Essay,” using alphanumeric outline format. If necessary, review Lesson 7 of this unit. This outline must contain at least three main headings (I, II, III) with at least two subheadings (A, B) under each. Use either sentence or topic format.
Upload your outline as a document.
