Long ago there was a village that sat beside a small river. In the spring when it rained, the river carried water, which the people used to water their crops. Later in the year, the rains would stop and the river would dry up completely. During that time, the people could grow no crops, and had to rely on what they had saved from the rainy times. Then a young man had an idea. He told all the people that if they built a dam, they could hold back water, and then grow crops during the dry season. This made sense to the people, and they set to work building a large dam. The next year the rains came. It rained and rained and water rose to the top of the dam. It kept raining and water flowed around and over the dam. It was too much for the dam. The dam broke and the water carried away the village and all its good farmland. The people moved away and built a new village beside another small river. There, they watered their crops during the rains, and watched the river go dry later in the year.
