8. In this clip, Michael asks if the “Holocaust” heading is “another example of Marrin going for drama.” How does the group ask questions and make comments that build on and clarify one another’s points to explore what Marrin meant by “holocaust”? Christina: Oh! Marrin wants to hook us. He wants us to feel the drama.
Michael: Yeah. Like the title: “Holocaust.” I think that’s another example of Marrin going for drama.
Chris: Wait, you think he’s comparing the fire the Jewish Holocaust? But how?
Ana: I looked up “holocaust,” to see what it meant: “Holocaust is an extensive loss of life, especially through fire and also sacrifice consumed by fire.”
Christina: Woah! I just got the chills.
Chris: So, you think the workers were sacrificed by their owners?
Michael: There were a lot of women packed into that factory.
Christina: Young, immigrant women.
Ana: And they locked the doors on them!
Chris: Yeah, but in a sacrifice you sacrifice for something, show does that apply?
Christina: You said it yourself! The Shirtwaist Tragedy energized the labor movement.
Chris: So, you think Marrin is saying that the workers were sacrificed for the movement?
Christina: Their deaths made change necessary.
