Golding has proven to readers time and again that the beast is not a creature to be feared. There has always been some logical explanation (the parachutist, Simon crawling around in the dark, etc.). In addition, Piggy and Simon have hinted that the beast may be "us." Considering what we know to be Golding's overall purpose in writing this novel, what could the Pig's head and the flies symbolize?
