Writing Activity: Letter

Juan’s letter to Mariana is central to this story’s plot. Explore that letter through two brief writing tasks. In both pieces of writing, include evidence from the text and use the conventions of standard English.

In the character of Juan, write the one-page letter you imagine he wrote to Mariana at the beginning of the story. Then identify evidence of anti-government ideas that a censor might find--highlight the anti-government ideas in yellow.
Write a one-page report in the character of Juan as a Censorship Division employee explaining why the letter shows that Juan is a traitor to his country.
Complete BOTH in a single documents--it will be 2 pages in length.
