Betty Kinkade walked into the detention hall and groaned. Her worst fear had come true. Ryan Reynolds, the boy who seemed to thrive on annoying her, was seated at a table and throwing rubber bands at the sleeping Mr. Ulnick, who was supposed to be in charge of detention hall. Betty slid into her seat and tried to ignore Ryan. He had already gotten her into enough trouble. He leaned over and pulled on her curly red hair. "Hey, carrots," he whispered. "Want to have some fun?"
"This is detention, Ryan," Betty said coldly. "We are already in here because of your idea of "fun"—which always seems to involve me getting into trouble. Let's not compound this disaster, okay?" Ryan frowned and pretended to scratch his head.
"Wow, Miss Scarlett," he drawled. "Those are some big words. Too big for me to understand, in fact. I guess you mean, 'Yes, Ryan! Tell me what wonderful adventure you have planned for our next hour!' " Betty watched nervously as Ryan walked over to Mr. Ulnick's desk. He snatched a small black book off the desk and sauntered back to Betty.
"You shouldn't be touching a teacher's belongings, Ryan," she whispered insistently. Ryan just grinned and pulled his desk closer to hers.
"And he shouldn't be sleeping while we're in detention, right?" he replied. Betty knew she should wake Mr. Ulnick, but she couldn't help but be curious about the black book he was always scribbling in during class time.
"Hey, it's a diary," said Ryan as he opened the book. "Are you sure you wouldn't like a peek, Red?" Betty glared at him while she wrestled with her conscience. Why is it so hard for me to ignore him, even when I know it's going to get me into trouble? she asked herself. Neither Betty nor Ryan noticed that another student had been watching them from the doorway. Arnold Dillinger, the boy Ryan had picked on and Betty had ignored for years, smiled to himself as he left the room as silently as he had entered. Revenge is a dish best served cold, he told himself. Based on the information in the story, what will Arnold most likely do next?
A.
attempt to get Betty and Ryan in trouble
B.
