Lloon in a Bottle Here is an interesting and fun experiment for you to try.

(Be sure to ask an adult for help!)

What you will need:

• A large glass bottle or jar with a lid

• A round balloon

• Two plastic straws

• A rubber band

• A small piece of modeling clay

• A drill

What to do:

Step 1. Push the end of one straw into the mouth of the balloon so that 1 inch of the straw is

inside the balloon. Fasten the balloon tightly to the straw with a rubber band.

Step 2. Ask an adult to help drill two holes in the jar lid. The holes should be the same width

as the straws.

Step 3. Push both straws through the holes, starting from the inside of the jar lid. One of the

straws (B) has the balloon attached to the other end.

Step 4. Twist the lid onto the jar as tightly as possible.

Step 5. Mold a tiny ball of soft clay around each straw where the straw passes through the

lid. Pinch the clay to seal the jar tightly.

Step 6. Place your mouth over straw A and inhale air from the jar. As you remove air from the

jar, you will see the balloon grow larger.

What is happening?

Before you inhaled air from the jar, the air pressure inside the jar was the same as the pressure outside the jar. When air from inside the jar was inhaled, the air pressure inside the jar was reduced. Reduced air pressure means that fewer air molecules are pushing in on the balloon. As a result, when the pressure in the jar is reduced, the balloon is able to expand because fewer air molecules are pushing on the balloon.
