Choose the BEST summary for this passage. Herbert Carr is worried about how he and his mother will be able to live now that his father is dead. His mother works at the post office and is probably going to be fired. Mr. Carr only earned about $400 a month and did not save any money. After his father's death, Herbert and his mother are worried about money. The post office job is probably going to be given to a well to do store owner, so Herbert calls on the influential squire to plead his case and remind the squire that he owes a debt to the Carr family. He asks him to see that his mother keeps her job, but Herbert leaves the meeting feeling like his visit did no good at all. Mrs. Carr reminds her son that many men are selfish and uncaring. Worried that his mother will lose her job and income, Herbert calls on the squire to ask for his help. The squire offers Herbert a job at Mr. Graham's store, but Herbert declines. Ebenezer Graham has a reputation for being mean and stingy. Tom Tripp works for him and has to work long, long hours for scarcely any money. When Herbert is offered that same job, he turns it down and instead asks Squire Walsingham to use his influence to see that Herbert's mother keeps her job at the post office.
