Bell was reclusive
Although Bell had received honors around the world, and belonged to more
clubs and organizations than he probably could have named, he was
essentially a very private person. In 1890, Bell wrote to Mabel, "I feel more
and more as I grow older the tendency to retire into myself and be alone with
my thoughts." Fortunately, Mabel, who continually urged Bell to move out
into the world, refused to let him withdraw. "Please try to come out of your
hermit cell," she scolded one time when they were separated. "Accept all the
invitations to dinner you get," she suggested during another separation.
