How was the election of 1828 different from elections today? The system, also called the patronage system, was a practice where the political party having won an election gave voters government jobs and other favors. After Andrew Jackson won the election in 1828, he removed individuals from office and replaced them with supporters. The cabinet was a term used by the president’s opponents to describe the number of unofficial advisors in the US Cabinet.
