Hundreds of thousands of runners compete in marathons every year. Marathons are 26.2 mile
races that test a runner's strength, marathons also test a runner's endurance and athletic mindset.
Modern marathons were inspired by the legend of Greek runner Pheidippides. The story goes
that Pheidippides ran about 25 miles from the town of Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 BCE
he was running to tell the Athenians that the Greeks had defeated the Persians in battle. When
Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern Olympics in Athens 1896, he set the first marathon
course to run from Marathon Bridge to the Olympic Stadium. This was a distance of about 24.8
miles. Marathons varied in length over the next few years, the 1908 Olympics were held in
London. The marathon couose ran between Windsor Castle and White City Stadium, a distance of
26 miles. However, the organizers wanted the race to end in front of the royal family's seats inside
the stadium to do this they added 2 miles to the race. Eventually, 26.2 miles became the set
distance for all marathons.
