The houses of Timbuktu were not made of gold as Iken had imagined. Still, the effects of the
trade were evident in the city's diverse inhabitants, whose livelihoods centered around the
precious metal. Iken was overwhelmed by the multitude of different languages and cultures he
saw on the city streets. Iken saw many nomadic traders like his father, dressed in cotton tunics,
billowy trousers, and blue veils. They also walked among native Malinke merchants in bright,
colorful prints and Islamic scholars dressed in crisp white robes.
