Read the following excerpt from an online op-ed article. Switching our school cafeterias to local, organic foods would also help
stimulate the economy of our region. Currently, most of the providers
that service our schools are from out of state, and many are located as
far as two time zones away! The South Coast Agricultural Guild
provides a listing of local, organic growers organized by location.
There are several nearby options for everything the cafeterias would
need, as each food group is well represented in the area. Creating a
sustainable relationship with these small, local businesses would not
only create jobs and assist an economy badly in need of a boost, but it
would also teach students the value of supporting their own
community's growth. Down the line, these local relationships might
even lead to student internship or employment opportunities, creating
a truly self-sustaining model. Garden City has adopted organic foods in
its school cafeterias; it's time for us to do the same.
