Why is it so effective that the narrator says that "[Rainsford] has new things to learn about fear when considering the beginning of the story?

When he heard the sound of the pack of hounds he knew that he now had to fear them. It is effective because we see how he was not frightened or paranoid about the sailor lore or about ship-wreck island (beginning of the story). It gives us new image of him being scared of the animals instead of them being afraid of him.
