Read the passage and answer the following question(s A Snowy Day
by Mona Gedney
1

The icy wind stabbed through Eliza's thick winter coat. It snatched at the scarf her mother had wrapped firmly around her neck and face so that only her eyes showed. When she met her friend James along the long road to school, she knew that they were thinking the same thing. It was a good thing that they knew one another's jackets and scarves and their own regular morning schedule. If not, they would have had difficulty recognizing one another. There was no attempt at conversation as they struggled against the wind. All their attention was given to the endeavor of staying upright. They also had to watch for deep wagon ruts in the road that could cause a sprained ankle for the unwary. Enough snow had fallen to disguise them.

The two of them opened the schoolhouse door with gratitude. Miss Pratt had been there for some time because the wood stove already radiated a welcoming warmth. Eliza was grateful that her desk was close to it. She would thaw more quickly than James, who sat close to the door. They peeled off their coats and scarves and hung them on their assigned hooks. Below the hooks, they placed their boots and lunch pails.

Eliza thought longingly of her slice of tart cherry pie. It was a special treat that came only a few times during the school year. She was grateful now that she had helped her mother pick and preserve the cherries last summer. She loved every season of the year because of their cherry orchard. In the spring, it was a sea of foaming blossoms. In the summer, the cherries ripened, and she was able to eat almost as many as she wanted while she picked them. In the fall, they drank the cherry cider her mother had put up. Best of all, in the winter, they were allowed to open some of the jars of cherries for pies and turnovers. The family considered their cherry orchard as one of their great blessings. Cherries had been grown in the area since the 1850s. Eliza's father had bought a farm with an established orchard 30 years later.

Eliza sat down at her desk and prepared for the day. Her father often told her that she was fortunate to be able to go to school. He pointed out that many children her age had to work on their parents' farms. Others had to earn money for their families by working at other jobs. Therefore, Eliza was determined to do her best at school. James sat and stared out the window, watching the gusting snow. Eliza glanced at him and grinned. She knew that he would rather be helping his father with chores at home.

When it was time for reading, she stood at her desk and carefully read aloud from the textbook she shared with another girl. During penmanship, which followed reading, she was very cautious. The ink always stained her fingers, and it could definitely ruin her dress. She dipped the steel nib of her straight pen gingerly into the ink and worked on the rows of graceful loops that were a part of the daily exercise. After penmanship would come arithmetic, and then her favorite subject, geography. She also enjoyed US history, but she had to wait until the afternoon for it. She often wished that she went to school in town like her cousin Rose. There, the students also took music and drawing.
6

By the end of the school day, a thick blanket of snow lay across the landscape. To Eliza's delight, enough had fallen for her father to get out the sleigh and come to get her. She and James, along with others who lived in their direction, climbed onto it eagerly. Together, they glided home through a fairy-tale landscape, grateful that they were not trudging through the drifts on foot. As they passed the cherry orchard, softly pillowed in white, Eliza smiled. Soon, she knew, the orchard would be dressed in blossoms instead of snow. 16.
