To start off, Lyddie desperately needs the money. In chapter 12, Lyddie receives a letter
from her mother. Her mother told Lyddie that she lost her baby sister, Agnes. She was
overwhelmed. This helped Lyddie realize that her family requires the money. "She must
work harder. She must earn all the money to pay what they owned, so she could gather
her family together on the farm while she still had family left to gather." Pg 89. If Lyddie
signs the petition, her process of getting money will be slowed because she will get fired,
and she really wants to gather her family again.
