Then the ship entered the narrow stretch of the Golden Gate and I could see American hills on my left and American houses on my right, and I took a deep breath of American air. “‘Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,’” I cried,

“‘Who never to himself hath said,

This is my own, my native land!’”

I forgot that there were people behind and around me until I heard a few snickers and a scattering of claps, but I didn't care. I wasn't reciting for anyone's benefit but my own.
