Cerials gates
At the end of Chapter 2, it is pretty clear that the young boy with the birthmark is dead, having burned to death in the fire at the top of the mountain. That's some pretty heavy
stuff, and if it had taken place in society, not on the top of a mountain on an island in the middle of nowhere, we would be looking for someone to hold responsible.
Can we hold someone responsible? If so, who... and also, why are they responsible and not the others?
If we are going to hold everyone responsible, is that fair?

Piggy didn't even want to do it, and didn't cooperate. The littlest kids had no idea what they were even doing. Is it fair to hold them accountable to what
accounts to a serious crime?

KEEP THESE IDEAS IN MIND WHILE THINKING:

• Ralph is the leader, and the fire was his idea. We often hold leaders accountable to bad decisions.
• Jack ran off to go do it, without thinking, and pretty much riled up everyone to do it. He also snatched the glasses off of Piggy...and without the glasses, they could
not have started a fire.
• Piggy had the glasses that started the fire. Without Piggy showing up, it wouldn't have happened.
• Sam n' Eric, and Roger, both clearly know something about building fires, but they don't share their information until after things have gotten out of hand. If they
had spoken up beforehand, they fire might not have giotten out of control and killed someone.
Those are all pretty interesting levels of responsibility.

Read the excerpts from "the royal house of thebes" and "the story of a warrior queen." "we are women," she told her sister. "we must obey. we have no strength to defy the state." "choose your own part," antigone said. "i go to bury the brother i love." "you are not strong enough," ismene cried. "why, then when my strength fails," antigone answered, "i will give up." she left her sister; ismene dared not follow her. —"the royal house of thebes" again and again the romans were defeated, till it almost seemed as if the britons really would succeed in driving them out of the country. boadicea herself led the soldiers, encouraging them with her brave words.
