Osip and Olga Dymov's relationship is successful despite their differences because of Osip's devotion and respect for his wife's interests and social life. Though Olga doesn't seem to have the same devotion to her husband's works and interests, Osip's actions seemed to keep and maintain the couple's relationship.

But despite everything, the relationship cannot survive and carry on for long if the devotion is only from Osip's side. Like her husband, Olga should also show the same devotion to make the relationship going. Contrary to that, she would instead embark on an affair with her artist friend rather than stay with her husband.

Anton Chekov's short story "The Grasshopper" revolves around the story of Olga Dymov and her husband Osip Stephanych Dymov. Despite their differences, be it in their personalities and even interests, Chekov seems to focus on the importance of humanity and how the real, flawed characteristics can be redeemed by a touch of humanity.

While Olga is a socialite, always surrounded by artists and the drama world, her husband Osip is quite the opposite. He's a doctor, more introverted, and focused on helping people 'behind the scenes' and not 'socially active' like his wife. And despite their differences, their relationship stays successful because of Osip's devotion to her and her every whim. One instance of this is when he returned to their townhome from the countryside to get a dress she wanted to wear the next day.

Their successful relationship will change, for the wife seems to do things only that interests her and not much into what her husband is doing. While the husband may be devoted and cater to her requests, he also has his work to focus on and that devotion will not stay for long as it seems to be only one-sided devotion.
