The sounds of passing cars, barking dogs, and children playing grew fainter as the cool woods enveloped her. Just as the scratches on her legs began to sting, she stumbled into the clearing. Soft moss covered the ground. The arching branches created a dome above her, blocking out most of the light, creating a dim, sacred haven. Resting her back against the trunk of a birch tree, she pulled the notebook from her backpack and started to read.
