Albert Einstein called her "the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the
higher education of women began," but Emmy Noether's higher education almost didn't happen at all. Born
in Germany in 1882, Noether was not permitted to enroll in college preparatory school because she was
female. She was determined to study mathematics at the university level, so she got permission to take
the entrance exam-and passed it. Even then, she was only allowed to audit courses rather than enroll as
a regular student. Despite the obstacles, Noether persevered and passed the university's graduation exam
in 1903; later, after restrictions on women's rights in the university were lifted, she earned her doctorate.
The groundbreaking work Noether went on to do garnered her recognition as one of the twentieth century's
greatest algebraists.
