From Point: “Celebrities Should Not Be Idolized as Heroes”

9 Dr. Stuart Fischoff of the American Psychological Association says it’s normal for people to idolize those who have fame and fortune. “We are sociologically preprogrammed to ‘follow the leader,’” he says. However, if young people choose to idolize a celebrity who indulges in risky behavior, then they might be inspired to do the same. They may think that if they act like their idol, they too will become famous.

. . .

11 Convincing young people that celebrities do not make good role models or heroes will be difficult. So the media needs to focus on real heroes. Many can be found in history. Examples include Martin Luther King Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Gandhi, and Abraham Lincoln. There are also many everyday men and women who have acted heroically. Even though they have flaws as all humans do, their courage can inspire others. These people will still be heroes long after some celebrities are no longer remembered.
