The Lion, the Fox, the Jackal, and the Wolf One day, Lion was hungry and decided to go out hunting. The Fox, the Jackal, and the Wolf knew Lion was a great hunter. So they asked if they could come along. Lion didn’t need their help, but he said they could follow him.

Soon, they came upon a large deer. They worked together and soon took its life. Then Lion commanded, “Cut this deer in four parts for me.” The other animals immediately fell to the job of skinning the deer and dividing the meat into four equal shares.

When the Fox, Jackal, and Wolf had finished their long labor, Lion said, “The first quarter is for me because I am the King of the Beasts. The second fourth is also for me because I am the one who decided to go hunting and also led this hunt. The third quarter is mine because it is only fair that I receive a quarter for my part in the chase. As for the fourth quarter, I must ask which of you dares to lay his paw on it?”

“Harrumph!” said the animals to themselves as they walked away from Lion and the deer. But they spoke in very low voices indeed.

The Lion, the Bear, and the Fox

One day, when Lion was hungry and out hunting, he spotted a baby goat. What he did not know was that Bear was hungry and out hunting, and Bear spotted he baby goat at the very same instant. Although they came from different directions, both Lion and Bear fell on the goat at the same time.

It was not a big problem to kill the small goat. But Bear and Lion went on and on fighting each other for possession of the goat. Finally, after a long battle with no true winner, they fell into an exhausted heap.

At that moment, Fox came by. He saw Lion and Bear on the ground, side by side, with the goat in the middle. He studied the scene for a few minutes, making sure that Lion and Bear were as tired out as he thought they were. Then he made a fast dash for the goat. He picked it up and carried it off.

“Harrumph!” the Lion said. “We have gone to all this trouble and fought so hard only to serve dinner to a fox.”

Read the excerpt from twelfth night, by william shakespeare. if music be the food of love, play on; give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, the appetite may sicken, and so die. that strain again! it had a dying fall: o, it came o'er my ear like the sweet sound, that breathes upon a bank of violets, stealing and giving odour! now read the excerpt from "the love song of j. alfred prufrock." for i have known them all already, known them all: have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons, i have measured out my life with coffee spoons; i know the voices dying with a dying fall beneath the music from a farther room. what does the phrase “dying fall” most likely mean in both excerpts? the noise is jarring. the noise is soothing. the sounds are fading. the sounds are too loud. mark this and return
