Read the statement below, and then answer the question that follows it. President Obama believes that creativity is a valuable trait for people to have. Explain how you can tell that the above statement is true. Write a paragraph responding to this question. Use at least two details from the passage to support your response. from âThe Presidentâs Speech to Studentsâ by President Barack Obama1 Youâre this countryâs future. Youâre young leaders. And whether we fall behind or race ahead as a nation is going to depend in large part on you. So I want to talk to you a little bit about meeting that responsibi l it y.2 It starts, obviously, with being the best student that you can be. Now, that doesnât always mean that you have to have a perfect score on every assignment. It doesnât mean that youâve got to get straight As all the timeâalthough thatâs not a bad goal to have. It means that you have to stay at it. You have to be determined and you have to persevere. It means youâve got to work as hard as you know how to work. And it means that youâve got to take some risks once in a while. You canât avoid the class that you think might be hard because youâre worried about getting the best grade if thatâs a subject that you think you need to prepare you for your future. Youâve got to wonder. Youâve got to question. Youâve got to explore. And every once in a while, you need to color outside of the lines.3 Thatâs what school is for: discovering new passions, acquiring new skills, making use of this incredible time that you have to prepare yourself and give yourself the skills that youâre going to need to pursue the kind of careers that you want. And thatâs why when youâre still a student you can explore a wide range of possibilities. One hour you can be an artist; the next, an author; the next, a scientist, or a historian, or a carpenter. This is the time where you can try out new interests and test new ideas. And the more you do, the sooner youâll figure out what makes you come alive, what stirs you, what makes you excitedâthe career that you want to pursue. . . .4 So thatâs a big part of your responsibility, to test things out. Take risks. Try new things. Work hard. Donât be embarrassed if youâre not good at something right away. Youâre not supposed to be good at everything right away. Thatâs why youâre in school. The idea, though, is that you keep on expanding your horizons and your sense of possibility. Now is the time for you to do that. And those are also, by the way, the things that will make school more fun. 5 Down the road, those will be the traits that will help you succeed, as wellâthe traits that will lead you to invent a device that makes an iPad look like a stone tablet. Or what will help you figure out a way to use the sun and the wind to power a city and give us new energy sources that are less polluting. Or maybe youâll write the next great American novel. . . .6 But I also want to emphasize this: With all the challenges that our country is facing right now, we donât just need you for the future; we actually need you now. America needs young peopleâs passion and their ideas. We need your energy right now. I know youâre up to it because Iâve seen it. Nothing inspires me more than knowing that young people all across the country are already making their marks. Theyâre not waiting. Theyâre making a difference now. . . .7 There are students like Will Kim from Fremont, California, who launched a nonprofit that gives loans to students from low-income schools who want to start their own business. Think about that. So heâs giving loans to other students. He set up a not-for-profit. Heâs raising the money doing what he lovesâthrough dodgeball tournaments and capture-the-flag games. But heâs creative. He took initiative. And now heâs helping other young people be able to afford the schooling that they need. . . .8 The point is you donât have to wait to make a difference. Your first obligation is to do well in school. Your first obligation is to make sure that youâre preparing yourself for college and career. But you can also start making your mark right now. A lot of times young people may have better ideas than us old people do anyway. We just need those ideas out in the open, in and out of the classroom. . . .9 When I meet young people like yourselves, when I sit and talk to [a student at this school], I have no doubt that Americaâs best days are still ahead of us, because I know the potential that lies in each of you. Soon enough, you will be the ones leading our businesses and leading our government. You will be the one who are making sure that the next generation gets what they need to succeed. You will be the ones that are charting the course of our unwritten history. And all that starts right nowâstarts this year. . . .

Read the passage from animal farm. "that was part of the arrangement! " cried squealer. "jones's shot only grazed him. i could show you this in his own writing, if you were able to read it. the plot was for snowball, at the critical moment, to give the signal for flight and leave the field to the enemy. and he very nearly succeededâi will even say, comrades, he would have succeeded if it had not been for our heroic leader, comrade napoleon. do you not remember how, just at the moment when jones and his men had got inside the yard, snowball suddenly turned and fled, and many animals followed him? and do you not remember, too, that it was just at that moment, when panic was spreading and all seemed lost, that comrade napoleon sprang forward with a cry of 'death to humanity! ' and sank his teeth in jones's leg? surely you remember that, comrades? " exclaimed squealer, frisking from side to side. now when squealer described the scene so graphically, it seemed to the animals that they did remember it. at any rate, they remembered that at the critical moment of the battle snowball had turned to flee. but boxer was still a little uneasy. how does the characterization of squealer support the authorâs purpose? squealer's dramatic accusations draw parallels between him and stalinâs propagandists. squealer's uncertainty shows that he is not a reliable ally of napoleon and is ineffective with messaging. squealer's ability to get the animals to listen to him shows that any animal can rise to be a leader in time. squealer's humble interactions with the animals reflect the importance of equality and cooperation.

Industrialization in europe changed the way people lived. the urban working class came into being, and with it came the drudgery of work. which two parts of this excerpt from franz kafka's the metamorphosis most closely reflect this impact of industrialization on people's lives? "what's happened to me? " he thought. it wasn't a dream. his room, a proper human room although a little too small, lay peacefully between its four familiar walls. a collection of textile samples lay spread out on the tableâsamsa was a travelling salesmanâand above it there hung a picture that he had recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and housed in a nice, gilded frame. it showed a lady fitted out with a fur hat and fur boa who sat upright, raising a heavy fur muff that covered the whole of her lower arm towards the viewer. gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. drops of rain could be heard hitting the pane, which made him feel quite sad. "how about if i sleep a little bit longer and forget all this nonsense," he thought, but that was something he was unable to do because he was used to sleeping on his right, and in his present state couldn't get into that position. however hard he threw himself onto his right, he always rolled back to where he was. he must have tried it a hundred times, shut his eyes so that he wouldn't have to look at the floundering legs, and only stopped when he began to feel a mild, dull pain there that he had never felt before. "oh, no", he thought, "what a strenuous career it is that i've chosen! travelling day in and day out. doing business like this takes much more effort than doing your own business at home, and on top of that there's the curse of travelling, worries about making train connections, bad and irregular food, contact with different people all the time so that you can never get to know anyone or become friendly with them. they can all go away! " he felt a slight itch up on his belly; pushed himself slowly up on his back towards the headboard so that he could lift his head better; found where the itch was, and saw that it was covered with lots of little white spots which he didn't know what to make of; and when he tried to feel the place with one of his legs he drew it quickly back because as soon as he touched it he was overcome by a cold shudder. he slid back into his former position. "getting up early all the time", he thought, "it makes you stupid. you've got to get enough sleep. other travelling salesmen live a life of luxury. for instance, whenever i go back to the guest house during the morning to copy out the contract, these gentlemen are always still sitting there eating their breakfasts. i ought to just try that with my boss; i'd get kicked out on the spot. but who knows, maybe that would be the best thing for me. if i didn't have my parents to think about i'd have given in my notice a long time ago, i'd have gone up to the boss and told him just what i think, tell him everything i would, let him know just what i feel."
