“The Hemingway story “a Farewell to Arms" is a thought provoking novel that inspires us to contemplate values such as the significance of passions, family, loyalty, and patriotism, which brings up questions about such themes making the reader question their own civil duties and how far one is willing to go for their country.

Frederic Henry is an American man participating in the war as an ambulance driver for the Italian Army. Henry's thoughts and the change in his views on war is a story of moral uncertainty and hope. His participation in the war is statutory due to it being the civil duty of all males to participate and defend the country. But, After seeing all the suffering and painthat the war causes, and himself being affected by pain and loss, this "duty" seems unfair and immoral to Henry. He is completely against war and wants nothing more but to live in peace with the woman he loves, start a family and live safely. Henry's desires lead him to abandon the army and escape the fight. This event makes him a criminal, and though Henry is happy to walk away from fighting, he feels a certain degree of guilt and shame for abandoning his country.

Henry's character development and his longing for happiness, even after reaching his goal can cause the reader to reflect on one's life. Our ever changing opinions and desires will often not lead us to complete satisfaction and sometimes it will come with more feeling of uncertainty and discomfiture, like the shame that Henry feels when deserting. Henry's story has brought up several questions as to my own patriotism, about responsibilities and about how much of myself I’m willing to sacrifice for such things. In conclusion,"A Farewell to Arms" is a multifaceted novel because it allows us to have a deep look at our humanity and what gives us the drive to continue on in trying situations and shows how complex and multi dimensional the human mind is and through Hemingway’s writing, we find insight into the human mind and told a story of a great moral dilemmas.”
