Writing Your First Draft
Reading
materials
In this activity, you'll answer a series of short answer questions analyzing a speech

normally would in an essay, but you'll compose short answers instead of a longer

Analyzing speeches is a little different from analyzing textual works because you get
to consider how the speaker's body language, tone of voice, timing, and other
strategies affect the overall impact
The following pages and your writing guide will help you. Be sure to fill in
all the questions in your writing guide; by doing so, you'll have a draft of
your assignment by the end of this activity. 1
This writing assignment will focus on the following skills:
• Identifying a speech's main point
• Analyzing rhetorical appeals and use of evidence
