6 percent of all school lunches
are considered nutritious
(Gardiner and Mabel 401).
The National School Lunch
Program requires schools to
serve lunches according to
age-appropriate portions.
Children who bought school
lunches are "30 percent more
likely to be obese" than
students who brought their
lunches from home every
day (Newman 24).
According to Rhys, “Typically
school lunches are packed
with over 900 calories. You
can help your children manage
a healthy diet by packing a
lunch for them to bring to
school." (12)
According to the National School
Lunch Program, the government
requires schools "to abide by
certain dietary guidelines chosen
each year" (USDA 24) to ensure
that it is meeting children's
nutrition needs.
One change that is being
implemented is that "school
lunches are required to provide
a specific variety of produce
each week" (Rita 4).
