Which historical reality led to the development of modernist poetry

The modernist poets favored intellect over emotions, also, isolation and alienation from the world. Some historical events had a direct conection and influence on their art, one of the most important was World War I, but also the fast growth of the cities and industrialization. Other relevant events were: Secularization, Atheism etc.
