He believed that women and men were both all equal, and you can see in his writing how felt that America should give people the same opportunities to succeed in life no matter who they were or are. This was very uncommon for a man of the 1800s to think, even if they believed slavery should be abolished most believed that women should run the house and the men should go out and get a job and that only men could vote, but Walt Whitman doesn't believe that he believes that every person should be equal no matter race or gender.
