Fredrick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln wanted to achieve the abolition of slavery throughout the United States. Lincoln was a reformist and wanted to abolish slavery as he believed it was an abomination of humanity.

Lincoln’s humanitarian background plunged America into a bloody civil war, when the Southern states, seceded from the Union and decided to continue using slave labor, as it was a prerequisite for cotton production. Lincoln’s visions of a slave free, United America was so strong that he vowed to use every means necessary to remove the institution of slavery. Douglass was an excellent orator, and having experienced the miseries of slaves first hand, he joined the abolitionist movement, thus, helping President Lincoln achieve his dream of a slavery-free America, a land of freedom.

The United States has been able to achieve the goals set by Douglass and Lincoln as all former slaves gained the status of equal citizenship, and were accorded the same rights and responsibilities that were granted to a white native American. However, the question was the degree of success of the Emancipation Proclamation. The slaves needed to be trained so that they would have access to equal employment opportunities. The enforcement of the abolition of slavery was limited, and it was not enforced until the passage of the 13th Amendment Act. However, despite the progress and liberal attitudes of the Reconstruction Era, the United States did not welcome their African American populations immediately within the social ranks but considered themselves superior, which was fuelled by the racist memories of the civil war. African Americans struggled everywhere to get equal opportunities to employment, education and even justice. However, the situation has changed gradually, and today, the United States has embraced its African Americans and all other ethnicities that are a part of its population. Thus, we can say that the nation has been able to fulfill the visions of Douglass and Lincoln.
